OSTEOARTHRITIS

OSTEOARTHRITIS

The most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA), affects millions of people worldwide. It is a degenerative disease that results in the deterioration of the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in joints. This breakdown results in stiffness, pain, and limited movement.

Even though the exact cause of osteoarthritis is unknown, several factors contribute to its development. With age comes a significant risk because cartilage naturally thins with age. Obesity, genetic makeup, frequent stress on specific joints, and previous joint injuries might also be factors. Osteoarthritis symptoms might include the following and usually develop gradually:

Joint discomfort that is typically worse with movement and goes away with rest

● Joint stiffness, particularly when waking up or after periods of inactivity

● Decreased mobility in the afflicted joint

● Soreness or swelling surrounding the joint

● Popping or grating noises are made inside the joint when moving

Diagnosis of osteoarthritis typically involves X-rays to assess joint damage, a physical examination, and occasionally blood tests to rule out other medical conditions.

The goals of osteoarthritis treatment are to keep joints functioning normally and to manage symptoms. Physical therapy to increase strength and flexibility, pain medication, and lifestyle modifications including managing weight and using joint supports may all be part of this. In extreme cases, joint replacement surgery may be considered to relieve pain and restore function.
